Gastric Sleeve in Turkey

What is Gastric Sleeve?

Gastric sleeve is the reduction of the size of a part of the stomach by cutting it with the laparoscopic (closed) method. In this way, patients easily lose weight after the operation. This operation is often preferred for the treatment of obesity, especially in recent years. There are a number of reasons for this. The most important reasons are that the operation is easy to perform, the risk of complications is low and it is a safe method of weight loss.

Obesity needs to be treated at an early stage because it brings with it many diseases. If patients do not return to their ideal weight, they may develop many chronic diseases such as diabetes, blood pressure and heart diseases over time. In order to eliminate this risk and lead a healthier life, patients who cannot lose weight naturally (such as diet and exercise) should definitely have obesity surgery.

Before Gastric Sleeve

Although different teams have different practices in the preparation process for stomach surgery, international and national obesity surgery associations have certain standards determined in this regard. Detailed examinations and examinations performed on patients before surgery should comply with the determined criteria. These criteria generally include:

  • Smoking should be questioned in a patient who is planned to have gastric sleeve surgery. Smoking adversely affects tissue healing after surgery. At the same time, the risk of complications increases, and after general anesthesia, the patient will have more pain and cough in the throat than usual. If possible, the patient should stop smoking before the operation.
  • Body mass index and fat ratio of the patient should be determined by performing body analysis before stomach surgery. If necessary, the diet should be changed before sleeve gastrectomy.
  • Diet before sleeve gastrectomy; It should be protein-heavy, poor in carbohydrates and fats, and supplemented with fresh vegetables. Considering the psychological status of the patient, an excessively demanding diet should not be applied. The diet should not be given to each patient as a standard list, but should be planned individually by considering the nutritional habits and body analyzes of the patients.
  • Before sleeve gastrectomy, the psychological state of the patient should be evaluated by a psychiatrist. The determination of the patient’s emotional state, substance use, addiction, and psychiatric diseases, if any, must be made before surgery. In such cases, surgery should be planned by taking into account the evaluation of the psychiatrist.

After Gastric Sleeve

In laparoscopic surgeries, there is no serious pain after surgery because the abdominal muscles and membranes are not cut. After the operation, painkillers are given to the patient. Those with gastric sleeves start walking in the evening hours of the day they have surgery. Usually on the second day they do not have much pain. The patient may have a feeling of tension, pressure on the first day, which is relieved with painkillers.
There are some issues that you should pay attention to after gastric sleeve surgery. They are as follows:

  • You should consume soft and liquid foods.
  • You should make sure that you are getting enough protein.
  • If food is not chewed enough, it can block the stomach outlet, causing pain, discomfort, and vomiting.
  • 2 plates of food should be eaten in 20 minutes. Many patients keep the average time as 45 minutes.
  • Sexual intercourse should not be performed for 2 weeks after the operation.
  • You should not drive for a month after the operation.
  • Alcohol should not be taken for 2 months after the operation, and for the aftermath; doctor’s approval must be obtained.
  • Heavy and challenging physical activities should be avoided for 2 months after the operation.
  • It is necessary to use a multi-vitamin supplement that dissolves or liquid in the mouth. You can consult your doctor for detailed information about vitamin supplements.
